(12) The past few days in Harstad aka ‘Hash tag’

June 19, 2012

Saturday 16th – Tuesday 19th June

After leaving Sara at the bus station we spent the next few days at the campsite reading, on the internet, playing ‘harbour master’ on our ipods – great game you can download for free – Sharon is currently harbour master – we decided whoever was the winner had to do the chores for the day despite the fact Sharon was supposed to be resting…Tim suddenly discovered lots of his dirty washing needed doing when he was harbour master –  eating, drinking tea and meeting fellow campers. We met many people, mainly from Scandinavia who were travelling in Norway.

We slept a lot – Sharon’s hand is much better and we’re ready to head off to the Lofoten islands tomorrow. We’re really looking forward to it – we’ve met so many people who have travelled through them and they sound amazing – so we’ll let you know!!

Off for an early night, we hope to get up early to get to Sortland (about 50 miles plus a ferry ride). We met a great Norweigan family at the weekend, who live on one of the Lofoten islands. They invited us to share their BBQ – we were eating bread and boiled eggs at the time so were only glad to accept. We had a lovely evening with them and they have invited us to stay tomorrow evening with them so are looking forward to it.

See you in the Lofoten islands!

Ps – to those of you who have been asking about our shark kite – there has been no wind to fly it. As soon as it’s windy we’ll fly’ old sharky boy’ as it’s fondly known, and post a picture : )

Glad to hear you are ready to set off again if you can tear Sharon away from her gaming. Getting out of Harstad up that hill will be the most taxing part of the next few days riding. Enjoy the Lofoten Islands and remember the bakerri just out of Sortland, very tasty buns. I’m home now had a good journey except we had an abortive landing at Heathrow having got about 200 feet from landing suddenly we were climbing rapidly, it appeared there was still a plane in the way on the runway, second time round we got down safely and my bike came round the carousel first this time. Well its back to work for me now, I’ll send you my photo’s soon. Lots of love Sara xx

Sounds like you’re having the most amazing time. Glad Sharon’s hand is getting better. Still raining and blowy here in Tavistock – glad I’m not doing the Dartmoor Classic on Sunday. Love Nicky

Hey! Sorry to hear about the rain – not good cycling weather! We’ve had some incredible head winds reducing our speed to about 4MPH at times- very frustrating : ) Love to Mike xx

    Hey guys,
So cycle blogging may be my new favourite thing. I think I have now found a way to enjoy cycling – all the stories and pics (Mum showed me hers last night – amazing!) and none of the exercise and pain = winner!
Sad it hasn’t quite gone to plan, but hey, that’s what makes life interesting right…?! Hope the hand/claw is back to normal size and Tim isn’t too sad at having to make do with an actual tool kit (bit selfish Sharon, but i’m sure he’ll forgive you at some point)
    Keep on trekking!
    lots of love xxx

Hi Helen – great to hear you’re a fan of cycle blogging!! My hand is loads better now thanks, Tim’s recovered from the disappointment of having to use a conventional tool kit
: ) Hope all is good with you, lots of love S and T xx

Looking forward to these shark kite photos – must google it!

I wonder if Sortland is as organised as it sounds? Think Pinks would fit in well there if it is! :p

    Safe cycling! 🙂 x

Hey guys! So sorry I didn’t reply sooner! I’ve been so neglectful and have missed what looks to be some amazing stories if the pictures are anything to go by! Things are crazy busy with our move – hardly have tend to think! I’m going to do a marathon catch up reading session of your blog on the plane to Oz! 🙂 We fly on the 5th Sept – craziness! Still can’t quite believe we’re going! Very unlike us to do smthg like this, but seems silly not to give it a go! We’re heading to Perth – did you guys go there on your year in Oz? It’s a bit of a plunge into the unknown, but we figure it’s time to push ourselves a bit! Hope the adventure’s going well – the photos are incredible – the Viking boat and the black church are stunning! Looking forward to hearing from you when you get a mo! Rose x

    Hey Guys,
Had the low-down from mum on thursday night – sounds like your having an amazing time!!! Glad to hear the multi tool – “Norwegian Army Knife” is transforming back into a hand again! You would have to had swapped to a dutch bike where you pedal backwards to brake otherwise…

Sad mum had to leave you guys, but as i’m sure you are seeing now, the islands were not to be missed.

Tim – you will have to fashion your own reindeer skin hat, if you loose it their is a never ending supply of fresh reindeer to make anther one. I think you should put antlers on it as well. Blend in with the locals! 🙂

Sounds like your having an amazing time – best keep the binge drinking until eastern europe, 30p a pint rather than £6.80… best hangover cure there is cycling 50-100 miles the morning after.

Stay safe, looking forward to the next installment.

Just remember pedaling forwards is tiring, BUT, pedaling backwards doesn’t give you more energy – trust me……. i’ve tried it…….

Hi Charles – great to hear from you. We love the idea about a reindeer hat but I’m no good at sewing and I dread to think what it would turn out like!!!! We now have a reindeer ‘mat’ for our tent – very homely : )

We really missed your mum when she left us. Yes looking forward to Poland – 30p a pint ehh????

See you in South America : ) S and T xx

Hi explorers!!! Glad all is good with you. We (Me & Mike) went on a little bike ride today, due to the fact it didn’t rain & it was a shame to waste the weather, & we were thinking about you “It was a Tim & Sharon ride” We thought! We went to Spreyton for a pint, then onto Sticklepath…..for a pint, then went home! Glorious leisure ride! Only difference was, ours was 2 pints in 2 hours, yours is ?*?*?*?*?*?*? pints in 2 years. The Dartmoor Classic was on, The National 50 mile TT in Cornwall was on, The Ironman Tri in Nice was on, but all we wanted was a pint!! He he! 🙂 Jac & mike xxx

Hey what are doing going for pub rides without us???!! Sounds fab – no boozing for us on our trip, beer is sooooo expensive here. We were only dreaming the other day of a good pub meal and a pint in the Railway. Have a pint for us (Jail ale for Shaz and Reel ale for Timo!!) and keep up the training : ) S and T xx
